Let's create together an offer (products + services) that secures and facilitates your daily travel and overcomes all your obstacles to switching to soft mobility!

Being in better mental and physical health (and yes we are putting strain on our body now), better control of our travel time (goodbye traffic jams), saving money (switch from the gas pump to the bike pump): it's good that’s responsible transport!

Aware of the issues and its environmental and societal impact, Decathlon intends to support this transformation by developing a recyclable helmet (#ZeroDiscardedHelmet) essential to your safety.

But as your safety cannot only depend on your equipment, we must go beyond our usual framework of equipment designer/distributor: by supporting you through a complete product + service offering.

We will keep you regularly informed of the progress of the topics and will also recruit participants from among you for round tables or face-to-face tests!

Help us create the first recyclable helmet!

We need your opinion on our design and on the design of our bicycle helmet intended for regular urban users.

We will first explain our eco-design* approach to you before presenting you with the illustrations of the product, so that you understand the link between the substance and the form of the concept:

A classic helmet is made up of an outer shell , an absorbent black foam liner , straps, comfort foam and adjustment systems.

We have extended the lifespan of the helmet by changing the plastic of the absorbent foam liner from EPS to EPP. This new plastic used on certain ski helmets can absorb several moderate shocks before being changed, whereas the EPS must be changed at the slightest shock.
To reduce the impact of the helmet, we have decided to remove the outer shell of the helmet, leaving only the absorbent foam liner. This shell, often made of ABS plastic, can represent up to half of the environmental impact of the complete helmet. We have worked on a texture on the liner so that the scratches and impacts of everyday life are less visible and thus delay the moment when the helmet appears worn and must be replaced with a new one.
No coat of paint will be applied after leaving the factory, no stickers, varnish or cosmetics because they represent a significant part of the environmental impact linked to chemical pollution.
To make this helmet recyclable, we have rethought the assembly of the components to make it dismountable : avoiding glue, welds, rivets, etc. For example, the straps are no longer held by rivets but by these removable plastic anchors like on the climbing helmets. The head size adjustment system is clipped instead of glued. This also makes the helmet easily repairable with spare parts.
The calotin will incorporate 25% recycled material from old calotin and will be 100% recyclable .
To enable recycling, elements composed of several bonded materials such as comfort foams must be redesigned and simplified into a single material. Otherwise they risk disrupting the sorting preceding recycling.
Finally, the helmet has also been designed to allow rental : for this the comfort foams are detachable and washable. Rental allows us to give several lives to an object and thus make the most of the plastic material created, it also allows us to recover the product at the end of the rental to recycle it ourselves. Who knows Decathlon can recycle Decathlon products?

In summary: no shell, removable, recyclable and made from 25% recycled content.

*ecodesign: reducing the environmental impact of a product at all stages of its life (manufacturing, use, maintenance and end of life) on all types of impacts (chemical pollution, CO2, raw materials, etc.)
